- or -
• Use Menu item "Open"
- or -
• Select a file in Workspace
Choose Services->Pack Up & Go->Compress
There are several options which control how the files and folders are compressed. See below to Preferences to learn more. If you need to transfer files between operating systems, the ascii "UUencode" option may be for you!

Smallest Archive Possible
This uses the -9 option of GZIP. Compressing will take a bit longer, but you'll get smaller files.
UUencode after Compression
Choose this option when you want to transfer files and cannot rely on a binary connection. This produces a uuencoded version of the tar.gz file that is 100% ascii. It will be significantly larger than a normal compressed tar.gz file.
Save Compressed File after encoding
When checked, the tar.gz used to produce the .uu file is not removed.
Remove Intermediate Files After Compression
Remove temporary files that may be created during compression process.
Pack Files in Temporary directory
When checked, files packed in a temporary directory. This has the benefit of not filling up your hard disk since the "/tmp" directory is removed when your reboot your machine. This is not a safe option if you are compressing files for storage, but is useful if you are compressing files for emailing.
Two Stage Tar and Compress
This will take longer, but you may end up with smaller files.

Tools
There are several additional tools which you may be interested in exploring - the Jobs panel and the Console. The Jobs panel displays each of the compression jobs that have been started and completed in the current session. Moreover, you can directly drag the compressed file from the Jobs panel into other locations or into a Mail message. Just drag the icon from the right side of the panel: |

The Console shows the actual commands being executed and whether there are any problems or errors. Choose "Clear Console" to sweep it clean. |
